The financial press is filled with negative stories about the tremendous circulation loss being experienced by American newspapers. The resulting financial loss has forced the sale of the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune and the Wall Street Journal. Even the once mighty New York Times is in trouble. Yet China's newspapers are thriving. Really thriving. Is it the economy? No, the problem is American journalism. All you get is bad news. By the time you finish an American newspaper you are left with a feeling halfway between depression and boredom. But when you read a Chinese newspaper (translated into English), you end up feeling good because you get all the news – the bad and the sad balanced with the inspiring, uplifting and beautiful. On a day filled with articles and pictures of the earthquake disaster, Chinese papers produced a balance of inspiring, uplifting and beautiful news. A feature on the art of Emma Hack is but one example.
