Posted 6/22/2009 MEXICAN FLAGLETS BLOOMING IN THE USA |
When General Winfield Scott marched into Mexico City to end the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848, President Polk quickly planted the American flag on a vast Mexican territory which later became the states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. To this day, over two-thirds of Mexicans believe this territory was illegally gained and still belongs to them. While the U.S. history writers explain the war as "manifest destiny," our southern neighbors consider the war to have been a wholly illegal invasion of Mexico. (Actually, the record shows that the U.S. violated international law in its actions, first against Texas and later against Mexico.) But the Mexicans have taken heart. They have made a hugely successful invasion of their former territory and may some day reclaim it. There won't be a war again. And some flamboyant Mexican General will not plant the Mexican flag in Los Angeles.
These little flaglets are the tens of millions of Mexican children born to Mexican immigrants, legal and otherwise. Mexican youngsters under 20 now are the majority of the under-twenty crowd in a majority of California counties. They dominate Anglo young people in all but a few counties in Arizona. In New Mexico, Mexican youngsters are the majority in all but five counties. And in Texas, Mexicans under twenty are the majority in half the counties. Keep in mind that Mexican marriages produce far more babies than do Anglo marriages. This all means that within twenty years, middle aged Mexicans will dominate the politics of four major U.S. states. Five years ago, As the flaglets mushroom and spread out over the country, we soon will have a nation heavily influenced by persons of Mexican decent. When you add in all the other rapidly growing minorities, we may find the Anglo becoming a distinct minority. Who knows, we may be erecting statues of General Santayana in the future. And the Alamo may be converted into a Dollar Store. In any event, start being polite to your hotel maid. Her daughter may be the next governor. (click here for a printable version of this article) |
